Grain byproducts (corn byproducts, wheat bran, rice bran, distillers grains) are common low-cost fillers and high-risk sources of mycotoxins. Aflatoxin and deoxynivalenol (DON) most often exceed safe levels in improperly stored grain byproducts. The 2020-2021 Sportmix incident caused over 110 dog deaths due to aflatoxin overload, declared a major public health event by the FDA.
